 The History behind the pancake.

Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Lent – the 40 days leading up to Easter – was traditionally a time of fasting and on Shrove Tuesday, Anglo-Saxon Christians went to confession and were “shriven” (absolved from their sins). A bell would be rung to call people to confession. This came to be called the “Pancake Bell” and is still rung today.

Shrove Tuesday always falls 47 days before Easter Sunday, so the date varies from year to year and falls between February 3 and March 9. In 2016 Shrove Tuesday will fall on the 9th of February.

Shrove Tuesday was the last opportunity to use up eggs and fats before embarking on the Lenten fast and pancakes are the perfect way of using up these ingredients.

So that is the History bit all tied up,

Now let me explain the WHY, behind the Power pancake.

Putting my nutritional coach head to one side and commenting as a parent it is always hard to find a tasty nutritious breakfast that will tick all the boxes for a jam-packed day of racing. I am a great believer in using Oats as a good source of slow releasing carbohydrates, But, as Boston say’s to me, they get boring. I mean I do add bit’s to make them a bit sexier, Greek yoghurt, Berries, Honey, Banana, Nut’s TBH there is an endless list of what I have stuck into this bowl of white pasty goo.

So, looking at alternatives, I knew I needed to make something that was a good alternative that also could be tweaked towards the consumers (Sweet/Savoury) taste. So when I was experimenting with some pancakes for my daughter Jersey, I thought why not make a mix that contains enough Protein & Carbohydrates to fuel an athlete for the morning of motocross, plus, if I made them in a neutral flavour they could add whatever they wanted to build them into a really tasty meal.

Hence the BIRTH!

The Power Pancakes, are very quick and easy to make, check out my Instagram (SGUTMX) and you will see how quick.

They are a great addition to the Campers fridge and all the required to make ( 1 x pancake) is 70ml of milk to mix and Hot non-stick pan to cook.

Each 40g serving consists of

Energy – 173 kcals   Protein 12g   Carbs 22g   Fats – 7g
